The University Center Commons overflowed with approximately 350 students at the start of the mock step show, which was hosted by the National Pan Hellenic Council (NPHC). The students all gathered together to represent and support the fraternities and sororities involved in the step show.
Sherrell Ladson shared some helpful information about the motivation behind the step show. Ladson said that during the time leading up to the mock step show each fraternity was assigned a sorority and each sorority was assigned a fraternity to make a "mock" step routine for. These "mock" step routines were meant for entertainment and lighthearted jesting with fellow Greeks.
Robbie Robinson, who participated in the step show, also provided some insight on the preparation that took place.
"Alpha Phi Alpha has known who we have had since before break so we had everyone start getting steps together since December. The hard part was being able to squeeze everything into a week of practice," Robinson said.
Robinson added that he thought the show was a success.
"Oh I loved it! Everyone did really well and respectfully represented each organization in a hilarious way. I laughed the entire time!" Robinson said.
Before the show, rain fell outside as people stood in line and awaited the step show with anticipation.
The weather did not succeed in turning away the crowd, some of whom waited for at least an hour before entering the warmer and drier interior of the University Center. Once inside, people filled the seats and then began to line the walls.
Trae Brown, a sophomore at FMU, represented Phi Beta Sigma and hosted the night's entertainment.
He announced each fraternity and sorority at the beginning of the show, and each introduction was met with each fraternity or sorority chanting their 'call'. After all of them were introduced, the stepping began.
Each fraternity and sorority put a lot of thought and creativity into their routines, and the crowd roared with laughter and applause during and after each high-energy performance.
The step show succeeded in achieving a packed house despite the less-than-desirable weather, and a portion of the proceeds will be sent to help the people in Haiti recover from their disastrous earthquake.
