The MDA fact sheet states that "the Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary national health agency-a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans."
The night began with introductions, and then the contestants came on the stage. The contestants came out first in their casual/letter wear representing their sorority, then in the Greek goddess category where they wore togas. The last category was eveningwear, in which each girl looked beautiful and represented her sorority with class and grace.
The three finalists were Heather Weatherford as second runner-up, Kayleigh Kersey as first runner-up and Emily Brandenburg, who was named Miss Greek 2010.
"It means the world to me to be Miss Greek. The Kappa Alpha brotherhood has helped make my four years at Francis Marion the best they could be. Being Miss Greek is important to me because I love the Greek life at FMU, and it is an honor to support it," Brandenburg said.
The Miss Congeniality award went to Brittney Stephenson, who was very shocked by the win.
"I am really glad I received this award. All the girls did a great job," Stephenson said.
The Kappa Alpha Order had many local businesses that sponsored and supported them in their fight against muscular dystrophy. In addition, many people came out to enjoy the pageant and support the efforts to aid MDA in the fight against muscular dystrophy.
Holly Todd enjoyed watching the Miss Greek pageant, and she wishes the winners a wonderful reign.
"There was a great turn out and the girls definitely made their sororities and school proud," Todd said.
Joel Ivey, a junior at Francis Marion and philanthropy chairman, commented on how the event was planned and put together.
"It was a lot of people's combined effort. The event was a culmination of brothers stepping up to the plate and the community standing behind them," Ivey said.
Jon Mark Craddock explained that many weeks were put into the planning and preparation of Miss Greek. He and his brothers in Kappa Alpha had over 20 sponsors who, along with the donation-givers and the people in attendance, helped in raising over $1,000 dollars for MDA.
"One hundred percent of those profits go to MDA. Joel Ivey, our philanthropy chair, and Logan Trively… were the real brains behind the pageant.
But with the help of the rest of the brothers, we got everything set up and looking good. I think that the night went very well, and we are really excited to give the check to such a good cause," Craddock said.
All people involved in planning, participating and attending the Miss Greek 2010 pageant helped the MDA in their battle against Muscular Dystrophy.
KA is also planning on holding a fundraiser to help with the Haitian earthquake disaster relief.
Anyone who would like to give donations to help the people of Haiti is encouraged to visit the booth in that KA will have in front of the Grille.
