The Senior Art Exhibit Opening Tuesday night drew a large number of people to see the show.
"I was surprised and pleased to see that the community came out and supported our students more than in the past," said Professor of Graphic Design Greg Fry.
"I think overall this is the largest turn out (we've ever had)."
The crowd was made up mostly of Veterans who came out to view the works created by Francis Marion's visual arts majors.
"It was an honor to have them (the veterans) come," said Fry.
Family and friends of the seniors also came to the exhibit to show their support.
The show lasted from six to seven-thirty in the evening. The refreshments for the show were mostly donated by local companies thanks to the efforts of senior Caroline Sellars. Fry said that the Visual Arts department has never had companies donate like that to the students before. He said he really likes to see the community step in and show their support. The members of the community and local companies that showed their support for the seniors were the S/W Printing Company, Piggly Wiggly at the Old Mall, Melinda Hardee, Rick Walden of the Florence County Veteran Affairs, and Irby Wilson of the Orr Company.
"I would really like to see that (support) pick up," he said.
The visual arts seniors are graphic design majors Jeffrey Easterling, Cyndal Mosely, Caroline Sellars, Hayley Douglas, and Casey Pierce; photography major Krista Jackson; and painting major James McCoy. Each artist has four to six pieces on display. These pieces are what they have worked on this semester in their respective art classes.
Fry said that the students really put a lot of time and effort into their pieces. He said that for every senior show there comes the "hard push" toward the end where students really put all they have into their work, and that it shows in the finished product.
Fry also said that Brad Jordan, the Art Director for Phoenix Design here in Florence, will be coming by to review the seniors' work. Jordan will be evaluating how the pieces stand on a university level.
"I think it (the opening) went really well," said Fry. "I thought it was a good solid show."
He said that this show always leads toward commencement. The show is over, now it is time to graduate.
The show runs in the Hyman Fine Arts Center Gallery from April 3to May 9, 2009.
