For the 2008-2009 school year, Francis Marion hosted various cultural and educational events on campus for students as well as Florence natives.
From graduation to annual festivals, FMU offered a variety of events for people from different backgrounds. Vice-President for Public and Community Affairs, Elizabeth Cooper offered her opinion on one of her favorite events.
"Graduation is a major event because itt is a culmination of a student's educational path," Cooper said. "Our mission is all about educating the sons and daughters of the Pee Dee Region and the state. Each commencement is a culmination and celebration of our mission."
On Saturday December 13, 2008 over two hundred graduate and undergraduate degrees were rewarded to deserving FMU students. William Hayne Hipp a businessman from Greenville was the guest speaker for the commencement exercises.
For students graduation is a time of remembrance for their times at FMU, but it also begins a new chapter after finishing their undergraduate or graduate education. With the top five events, graduation wraps up all of an individual student's education on campus.
The spring commencement exercises will be held on May 9, 2009 in the University Center's Gymnasium. Students completing their final courses will have the option of participating in the exercises this December.
At colleges and universities, homecoming gives current students and alumni, the opportunity to attend various events throughout the week at FMU. "We're Having Fun and You're still the One" was the theme for this year's homecoming events with the final games falling on Valentine's Day.
The University Programming Board (UPB) hosted Casino Night in which students were able to learn how to play various card games and slot machines for a variety of prizes.
With nationally known comedian Roy Wood Jr., a steel drums group, and a Homecoming Ball, students found some form of entertainment on any given night. To wrap up the week's events before Saturday's games, a bonfire was held across the street from the University's campus near the Baptist Christian Ministry's lawn.
