FMU prepares for fall graduation exercises
More than 280 students are expected to graduate during fall commencement exercises 10 a.m Dec. 15 in the University Center gym.
Former S.C. Gov. Jim Hodges will deliver the commencement address. Hodges served a term as governor from 1999 to 2003.
Along with Hodges, Emerson Gower will be awarded an honorary degree. Gower was appointed chair of the Campaign for Excellence in 2002.
Florence Little Theatre to present Holiday show
The Florence Little Theatre will present "A Big Band Christmas" at 8 p.m. from Nov. 30 to Dec. 1 and 3 p.m. Dec. 2.
The Florence Area Big Band, along with an ensemble of singers, will perform three concerts of Christmas and Big Band favorites at the theater. Holiday classics, such as "Silver Bells," "White Christmas" and "Silent Night," will be performed.
Tickets cost $10.00, and the box office will open today, Nov. 26. For reservations, contact Sue Schatz at (843) 662-3731.
Officials appoint Gourley to endowed chair
A. Glen Gourley Jr., theatre arts and speech professor, has been appointed to the Peter D. Hyman Chair in Art.
The position is named for a respected Florence attorney, who served in the state House of Representatives in the late 1960s, where he was instrumental in the founding of FMU.
Gourley, a native of Sweetwater, Tenn., has been a member of the faculty since 1985. He received the Award of Excellence in Service in 2004 and has directed more than 25 theatre productions at FMU.
Also, he has been a judge, consultant and adjudicator for several pageants and theatre performances throughout the state.
From 1985 to 1999, he held many positions with the Cherokee, N.C., outdoor drama "Unto These Hills."
He also has been involved in Ocunluftee Little Symphony productions, Glassboro Summer Theatre, Florence Little Theatre, Encore Theatre Company, Lake City Community Theatre, Manning Back Porch Players, Hartsville Community Theatre and dozens of public school projects.
